Trev’nor did not arrive within the next hour, nor did anyone else, and the supplies in Brecon went very low indeed. Becca actually picked up the mirror to call him when she heard a rising of voices near the main gates. It was a strange overlap of orders being called out, people wailing in relief, and the rumbles of dragons volleying back and forth. Not knowing what to expect, she rushed out into the main street to get a look for herself, only to stumble to an incredulous halt.

Every free dragon of Riyu and Jashni covered the buildings and along the top of the wall, crammed into the streets and the road outside. They carried crates and passengers, setting both gently to the earth, only shuffling aside to give the others room to enter the city. Becca expected soldiers to arrive with aid, and she saw more than a few uniforms, but most of the new arrivals seemed to be citizens. She recognized more than one face and felt the world tilt on her. Riyu’s citizens had come?

She spied Shad and Jetta in the crowd and broke into a jog, waving a hand over her head to get their attention. Shad broke off speaking to Jetta to return the wave, meeting her halfway. “I brought what help I could. Trev stole half of it for Dilmun.”

“Wait, he’s here?”

“Here and gone again,” Shad responded, his attention already drifting back to the people arriving. “Jetta had people mobilized in Riyu, so we passed the word via dragon to Trev and he swung by first to get me, then Jetta’s group, before coming here. I don’t even want to know how fast he was going, the earth was making some very strange cracking noises.”

Since Shad grinned saying that, Becca knew he’d enjoyed the adrenaline ride. “I can’t believe—Riyu’s people came to help?”

“It took no effort to convince them.” Jetta came to stand with them, a proud smile on her face. “I just spread the word that Brecon and Dilmun had people in trouble, the warlords had gone ahead. I didn’t even ask. They immediately pulled together food and water and when they learned of the children, every young woman and grandmother that could responded as well. We—”

Impatient, one of the women rushed forward, coming straight for them. It took Becca a moment to put a face to name, then it came back in a rush. Jamila, the young woman who had the guts to ask about the marriage license fees when they’d first taken Riyu. “Jamila.”

“Maharaja.” Jamila ducked into a quick bow, or as much as she could manage around the bottles and blankets she had cradled against her chest. “Where are the children?”

Straight to business. Becca grinned at her as that was exactly the right attitude for this situation. “Straight down this street, at the major intersection, go left. No, better yet—Jetta, take all the ones that can care for the children and lead them, please.”

“On it,” the woman responded briskly, turning back and clapping her hands, calling out orders.
